General Information
Here is some useful information about common tasks you may need to take care of. If you seem something missing, please send me an email about it.
You *must* be connected to eduroam to access the printers in McBryde or D&DS buildings.
If you are on VT Open WiFi, you may see the printers in the list of available printers, but you will not be able to actually connect to them. A VT VPN connection will also get you access.
We create a generic web page for you to use. Your page is available to everyone as https://personal.math.vt.edu/PID where PID is your VT PID. To make any changes to this page you would need to edit your index.html file.
You can get access to this by using either the file-shares or some form of SFTP (cyberduck on a Mac).
The file-shares allow you to edit the files directly as if they were stored locally on your computer. More information on using the file shares is availablehere.
To use SFTP you connect to ssh.math.vt.edu. Your web pages are located in /info/www/people/PID.
These are some of our more useful mailing lists and what type of people they go to. You need to be on an approved sender list to send messages to them, but
most faculty are on that list by default. Contact Bill Reilly if you think you should be able to send/receive email to/from one of these lists and can not.

Please note that the software used for our mailing lists does not like large messages. If sending a message with attachments, please only send it to one list at a time.
A backup service is available for files on your laptop/desktop/workstations. These backups are on a local server and are dumped to backup tapes 3 times per week. The backup service is only accessible from on campus or with a VPN connection.
If you have a Windows PC, please see Ben Williams for the needed software. Mac users should see either Ben Williams or Bill Reilly. Linux users please see Bill Reilly.
Every two years we have to report what equipment we have in our possession for inventory audit purposes. For equipment you have that is not located in your office, you must report it on a Home Authorization form. The Home Authorization Application Form is an electronic version of the form you can fill out.
Some helpful information in filling this form out is available at the VT Controllers Office website. Any equipment that you have in your possession that has a Property of Virginia Tech sticker on it must be reported as part of this audit.
Our Responsible Organization is 004900 - Mathematics. Also please make sure that Sarah Reznikoff is selected as Department Head at the bottom of the Approvals list.
