Administrative access for your laptop or desktop

Most people do not need admin access on their computers. For more information, please see the VT KB on Administrative Rights

  1. Use your favoirite web browser and visit Administrative Access for Endpoints and Servers in Service Now.
  2. If needed, click the Login to request this service button in the upper right.
  3. Click the Request this Service button in the upper right.
  4. This will bring up a form with your Requester Details at the top. Enter in your Name for Requested By and fill in the other fields in that top section.
  5. For the rest of the form, if you are reading this, you only qualify for option A:
  6. Make sure you review the information at the links provided in the form, then select option A. I certify that I have taken the recommended training listed above
  7. Select William Reilly or breilly for the departmental IT technical contact.
  8. Select Stephanie Hedrick or ssteph2 for the departmental authorized approver.
  9. List your business case for having admin access. "Because I want it" is not a valid reason.
  10. Select either End point: high-risk data or End point: moderate-risk data. Choose wisely.
Most people that use email on their computers and interact with students will want to select High-risk. Use the following information to fill out the rest of the form. Cool kids use cut and paste. Not all questions are asked for Moderate-risk.

  1. hostname of your computer: VT inventory tag number with the VT ie. VT000123456
  2. List VT asset tag numbers: same as above
  3. Systems for which I have Admin Rights will be patchedL Select My department handles timely patching
  4. Briefly describe the patching process : Department IT staff uses BigFix to patch computer systems
  5. Whole-disk encryption: Select Department IT staff has enabled whole-disk encryption and manages its keys
  6. Describe the whole-disk encryption solution: Department IT staff uses Bitlocker or Filevault and manages the keys.
  7. Anti-malware and antivirus protections: Select My department affirms that these protections are in place.
  8. List the name of the antivirus/anti-malware software used . For PC Defender, for Macs XProtect
  9. Backups of local user data : It's up to you to manage backups of your data.
  10. System(s) are registered with the departmental inventory system: Select My department handles departmental inventory
  11. A host-based firewall has been properly configured: Select My department manages the firewall
  12. At the end of the equipment's functional life: Select My department coordinates with surplus
  13. No anonymous system access is allowed.:Select My department has followed the above guidelines to meet Virginia Tech guidelines
  14. PCI-DSS, FISMA or other applicable export controls: Select My department has implemented
  15. Describe the log forwarding solution: Department IT staff manages log forwarding and review of logs
  16. BigFix or equivalent patch management: SelectMy department uses BigFix
  17. List the patch management service in use: BigFix
When finished click on the Submit button in the upper right. When and if your request has been approved, please contact Ben Williams or Bill Reilly to enable your admin access. Repeat violations of administrator policy will result in the loss of admin access.
