Changing Math Password with SSH

  • Press Start (Lower Left Corner>
    ssh1
  • Click All Programs and scroll down and click SSH Secure Shell

  • Double Click Secure Shell Client

  • The following Window will open

  • Press the Enter Key and the Remote connection window will appear
    Hostname: type "ssh.math.vt.edu"
    User Name: type "your PID"

  • If the HostIdentification Window appears click YES

  • click OK in the Message From the Server Window

  • Enter your Math Department Password and click OK

  • Type "smbpasswd" Press Enter
    Type your current Math Department Password after the Old SMB password: then Press Enter
    (there will be nothing appearing on the screen as you type)

  • Type your NEW Math Dept password after New SMB password then press enter
    (there will be nothing appearing on the screen as you type)

  • Type your new Math Dept password in again after Retype new SMB password: then press Enter

    If you typed in your Old Math Password and Typed and Confrimed your new password correctly you should see "Password Changed for user $yourpid as below

    If you get an error message please see http://www.math.vt.edu/technology/passwords.php and press the up arrow to try again

    or otherwise press Control + d to logout
